Getting Started Moving from Facebook Forum Software Hosting & Technical Billing & Account Ownership & Data
Getting Started
Is the 30-day free trial really free — no credit card at all?
Yes, completely. You sign up and your 30-day free trial starts immediately with no payment details required. We only ask for billing information when your trial ends and you choose to continue. If you cancel before the trial ends, you are never charged anything — no automatic payment, no forgotten subscription.
How do I get started?
Head to the sign-up page, create your account and your 30-day free trial begins. From your hosting control panel (DirectAdmin), open Softaculous, find your chosen forum software and click Install. The installer handles your database and file setup automatically. The whole process — from sign-up to live forum — typically takes under five minutes.
Do I need any technical knowledge to set up a forum on Nexforum?
No. Softaculous handles the entire installation automatically — database creation, file upload and initial configuration. You choose your forum software, enter a domain and admin password, click Install and your forum is ready. If you can manage a Facebook Group, you have more than enough technical ability to run a forum on Nexforum.
How long does it take to have a live forum?
Under 60 seconds from clicking Install in Softaculous. Account creation adds a few minutes if you're counting from absolute zero. Most people have a live, functional forum with their domain configured and their first boards set up within an hour of signing up — even with no prior hosting experience.
Can I try multiple forum platforms during my free trial?
Yes. You can install any of the 8 supported forum platforms via Softaculous during your trial — install a few, explore each one and decide which to commit to before inviting your members. Each installation shares your 2GB storage allocation. Most forum installs use under 100MB for the software itself, leaving plenty of room for experimenting.
What happens when my 30-day trial ends?
You'll receive a reminder before your trial ends. If you're happy with Nexforum — and we think you will be — your plan continues at £0.99/month billed via Stripe. If you'd prefer not to continue, cancel with one click from your ClientExec portal. No charge, no lock-in, no questions asked.
Moving from Facebook
Can I move my Facebook Group's content to a forum?
Facebook doesn't provide a straightforward export of group content. However, you can manually copy key pinned posts, rules and important discussions across. Most community admins start fresh with a welcome thread summarising their community's history and let the forum grow organically from there — which is often a natural and welcome reset for members too.
Do my Facebook Group members need to create new accounts?
Yes — your members register on your forum separately from their Facebook accounts. This is actually a benefit: they're joining a community that belongs entirely to you, not Meta. Some forum platforms (including phpBB and MyBB) support social login extensions if you want to make registration quicker for members who prefer it, though this is entirely optional.
How do I get my members to move from Facebook to the forum?
Post in your Facebook Group with your forum link and explain the reasons for moving — no ads, everyone sees every post, you own it. Offer something forum-exclusive (a members-only section, special content, early announcements) to give people a reason to join. Many admins run both in parallel for a few weeks, gradually shifting activity to the forum. Most communities complete the transition within a month.
Will my forum be visible to Google, unlike my Facebook Group?
Yes — this is one of the biggest practical advantages of making the move. Every thread on your forum is a public, indexable web page that Google can crawl, understand and rank. Over time your forum builds a library of searchable content that brings in new members organically. Facebook Groups are almost entirely invisible to search engines — years of valuable community discussion, completely undiscoverable from outside Facebook.
Is a forum harder to moderate than a Facebook Group?
Most forum admins find it easier, not harder. Forum moderation tools are built specifically for the job — move threads, merge posts, split topics, issue warnings, set post approval for new members, assign moderators with custom permission levels. You have significantly more control than Facebook's limited group moderation features offer, and the tools are far more transparent in how they work.
Do I need to close my Facebook Group when I launch my forum?
Not at all. Many community admins run both in parallel initially, using the Facebook Group as a referral channel to drive members to the forum. There's no obligation to close the group immediately — do it at whatever pace feels right for your community. Some admins keep both indefinitely; others close the group once the forum is clearly the primary home.
Which forum software is best for communities moving from Facebook?
Vanilla Forums and Flarum are our top picks — both have modern interfaces that feel familiar to members used to Facebook's look. SMF is the easiest for non-technical admins to manage day-to-day. phpBB is the best all-rounder for growing communities. See our full comparison page and our dedicated Facebook migration guide for detailed recommendations.
Forum Software
Which forum software platforms does Nexforum support?
Eight platforms, all free and open-source, all installed in one click via Softaculous: phpBB, MyBB, SMF, FluxBB, Vanilla Forums, PunBB, bbPress and Flarum. All are included in the same plan at no extra cost — there's no premium tier for "better" software.
I have no idea which forum software to choose. Help?
Start with our forum software comparison page — it covers all 8 platforms side by side with honest ratings across 20 features. As a quick guide: for the most modern interface, choose Flarum or Vanilla Forums. For the most powerful feature set, choose phpBB. For the easiest admin experience, choose SMF. For speed and minimalism, choose FluxBB. For WordPress sites, choose bbPress. And remember — your free trial covers all of them, so you can try a few before deciding.
Can I install plugins, extensions and themes on my forum?
Yes. Your forum installation is fully self-hosted, so you can install any plugin, extension or theme from the respective software's official repository or third-party sources — exactly as you would on any standard hosting environment. There are no restrictions on what you add to your forum, and Nexforum doesn't interfere with your software configuration.
How do forum software updates work?
When a new version of your forum software is released, Softaculous will notify you and offer a one-click update from within your hosting control panel. No manual file uploads, no database migration scripts to run manually — the update process is handled automatically. It's a good idea to ensure a backup exists before any major update, which our daily automated backup system handles for you.
Can I switch forum software after I've started?
Yes, though it involves some work. Each platform stores data in its own database format, so migrating content between platforms isn't a one-click operation — some platforms provide conversion scripts (phpBB being a notable example) while others require more manual effort. The best time to switch is early, before a large community has built up. This is exactly why we recommend trying a few platforms during your free trial before committing.
Does bbPress require an existing WordPress site?
No — you can install WordPress fresh via Softaculous and add bbPress immediately. Many people set up WordPress specifically to host a bbPress forum. However, bbPress is particularly valuable if you already have a WordPress site, because it integrates natively — sharing your existing users, theme and domain without any separate platform required.
Hosting & Technical
Where are Nexforum's servers located?
Your forum is hosted on servers located in Montreal, Canada. Montreal is a well-connected hosting hub with excellent transatlantic network links — fast for UK and European members browsing your forum, and a politically stable environment for your community's data.
What storage do I get and what counts towards it?
You get 2GB of NVMe SSD storage. Everything in your hosting environment counts towards this: forum software files, your MySQL database (which contains all threads, posts and member data), uploaded attachments, images, theme files and email. A text-based forum with tens of thousands of posts typically uses well under 500MB — 2GB is genuinely generous for the vast majority of communities. Images and file attachments are the main consumers for most forums.
Is bandwidth really unlimited with no catches?
Yes. Nexforum imposes no bandwidth limits, no fair-use thresholds and no overage charges. Your forum will never be throttled for being busy, and you will never receive a bill for unexpected traffic. This applies permanently — it's not a promotional period that expires.
How does the SSL certificate work?
A Let's Encrypt SSL certificate is provisioned automatically for your domain when you configure it on Nexforum. It's renewed automatically every 90 days without any action from you — you will never see a certificate expiry warning or need to manually renew. Your forum serves over HTTPS from the moment your domain is configured.
How do I connect my domain to my Nexforum forum?
Log into your domain registrar and update your domain's DNS records to point to Nexforum's nameservers or A records (we'll provide these in your welcome email). DNS changes typically propagate within a few hours. Once propagated, your forum is accessible at your domain and SSL configures automatically. Our support team can walk you through the process if needed.
What control panel does Nexforum use?
DirectAdmin — a clean, well-established hosting control panel used by providers worldwide. It gives you access to file management, database management, email account setup, DNS configuration and Softaculous for one-click software installation. It's significantly less cluttered than cPanel and most non-technical users find it easy to navigate within minutes.
Can I access my forum files via FTP?
Yes. FTP access is available for your hosting account from day one — use any standard FTP client with the credentials from your DirectAdmin control panel. DirectAdmin also includes a browser-based file manager if you prefer not to use a separate FTP client.
How do daily backups work?
Nexforum takes automated daily backups of your entire hosting environment — files, databases and configuration. These are stored separately from your live hosting. If you need a restoration — whether due to a software issue, accidental deletion or anything else — contact our support team and we'll restore your forum from the most recent backup as quickly as possible.
Billing & Account
How much does Nexforum cost?
Your first 30 days are completely free — no credit card required. After that, just £0.99 per month billed via Stripe. There are no tiers, no feature add-ons and no price changes planned. The same plan covers all 8 forum platforms, 2GB NVMe SSD, unlimited bandwidth, free SSL, daily backups, 1 email account, custom domain support and DDoS protection.
How is billing handled?
Billing is managed through ClientExec and processed entirely by Stripe — one of the world's most trusted payment processors. Your card details are stored and processed by Stripe only, never by Nexforum. You'll receive an email receipt each month and can manage your billing details, view invoices and cancel your subscription through your ClientExec portal at any time.
Can I cancel at any time?
Yes. Cancel at any time from your ClientExec billing portal with a single click. There are no cancellation fees, no notice periods and no lock-in contracts. If you cancel mid-month, your forum remains active until the end of the paid billing period and then closes — your data is retained for a short period if you change your mind.
Do you offer refunds?
Given the 30-day free trial, refunds are rarely needed — but if you encounter a genuine service issue after your trial ends, contact us and we'll deal with it fairly. We'd rather make things right than have an unhappy customer.
Will the price go up?
We have no plans to increase pricing. At £0.99/month we're intentionally priced so affordably that cost is never a reason to cancel. Any future pricing changes would be communicated with significant advance notice and would not affect existing customers without their explicit agreement.
Is there an annual billing option?
We currently offer monthly billing only. At £0.99/month the annual cost is just £11.88 — already low enough that we felt an annual tier would add unnecessary complexity. One simple price, billed monthly, cancel any time.
What happens to my forum if I stop paying?
Your forum will be suspended after a grace period following a failed payment. You'll receive notifications before any suspension and have time to update your payment details in ClientExec. Suspended accounts retain their data for a short period — your community history isn't immediately deleted. Contact support if you encounter any payment issues.
Ownership & Data
Who owns my forum and its content?
You do, entirely. Every post, every member profile, every uploaded file, every thread — all of it belongs to you and your community. Nexforum provides the hosting infrastructure; we have no claim over the content your community creates. This is fundamentally different from Facebook Groups, where Meta owns and controls everything.
Can Nexforum remove or shut down my forum?
In normal operation, no. Your forum runs on hosting you pay for and control. We don't monitor or moderate forum content (beyond standard hosting terms around illegal material). Unlike a Facebook Group, your forum isn't subject to automated moderation systems that can remove years of content overnight based on a policy misclassification.
Can I export or move my forum data?
Yes. Your forum data is stored in a standard MySQL database that you can export at any time from DirectAdmin. Your files are accessible via FTP or the file manager. If you ever want to move your forum to a different host, everything you need is portable and accessible — you're not locked into Nexforum's infrastructure.
Will Nexforum ever show ads to my forum members?
No — never. Nexforum is completely ad-free. No third-party advertisements are injected into your forum by Nexforum, by the forum software or by anyone else at the infrastructure level. Your members see only your community's content. This is unconditional — not a current policy that could change.
Does Nexforum comply with GDPR?
Nexforum takes data privacy seriously and operates in compliance with applicable data protection regulations. As a forum operator, you also have responsibilities under GDPR for the personal data your members provide when registering. We recommend including a clear privacy policy on your forum — all major forum platforms include privacy policy and cookie consent functionality built-in or via available extensions.
What happens to my data if I cancel?
We recommend exporting your forum database and downloading your files before cancelling — your DirectAdmin control panel makes this straightforward. After cancellation your hosting account is suspended and data is retained for a short grace period before deletion. If you need your data after cancellation, contact support as soon as possible.
